Md. Sayed Hasan Hridoy, a 2nd-year student at Dhaka University and a participant in the DFTP Spring course 2024, is leading a project to combat cyberbullying against girls and women. Teaming up with three other members, Hridoy launched this ongoing initiative in April 2024.
Cyberbullying and online harassment against women and girls have emerged as a significant concern, reflecting a larger pattern of violence against women both online and offline. This includes intimate image abuse, trolling, and the spread of pornographic images created using deepfake technology. A study conducted by Action Aid Bangladesh in 2022 revealed that 64% of women had experienced internet assault and harassment, with over 62% of victims being below the age of 25. Such harassment often leads to severe outcomes, including suicide.
To address this issue, Hridoy’s team is raising awareness through education, advocacy, and community engagement. They aim to empower women to navigate online spaces safely, promote digital literacy, and foster a culture of respect and tolerance.
The project’s activities include organizing an art exhibition in the campus, where 200 visitors are expected to attend, and installing 20 awareness posters across the campus. Additionally, they plan to create a dedicated online group where participants can raise awareness, share resources, and collectively advocate for change within their networks.
The project has already begun making a positive impact. By raising awareness through the art exhibition and awareness posters, the team is drawing attention to the issue of cyberbullying and online harassment. The creation of the online group provides a platform for participants to support each other, share information, and take collective action against cyberbullying.
Overall, Hridoy’s initiative is empowering women to navigate online spaces safely and promoting a culture of respect and tolerance. By addressing cyberbullying and online harassment, the project is contributing to the creation of safer and more inclusive online environments for girls and women in Bangladesh.
