In a significant stride towards nurturing a new generation of proactive and informed citizens, the Microgovernance Research Initiative (MGR), in collaboration with the International Foundation For Electoral Systems (IFES) and USAID, unveiled the “Democracy- From Theory To Practice” (DFTP) course this spring. Dhaka University, one of Bangladesh’s premier institutions, was at the forefront of this pioneering initiative, hosting the inaugural session of DFTP on February 10th, 2024. This course represents a crucial effort to empower young minds with the essential knowledge and skills for meaningful engagement in democratic life.
A Day of Firsts at Dhaka University
The launch of the DFTP program at Dhaka University marked a historic moment, not just for the institution but for the entire nation’s educational landscape. Under the guidance of Shehreen Amin Bhuiyan, an esteemed course instructor, the class saw an equal participation of 45 females and 45 males, alongside an indigenous student, reflecting the program’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity. The presence of Senior Program Manager Syed Sultan Chand and Civic Education Officer Rakibul Islam from IFES further underscored the significance of the day, bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world democratic practice.
Objectives and Aspirations
The DFTP course at Dhaka University aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of democracy, from its theoretical underpinnings to its practical applications. By fostering critical thinking, open dialogue, and active participation, the program seeks to prepare students not just as voters, but as future leaders capable of advocating for rights, equality, and justice. The curriculum is designed to challenge students to critically engage with democratic principles and to understand their role in shaping a democratic society.
Impact and Engagement
The enthusiastic participation of students in the inaugural DFTP class at Dhaka University signals a promising start to this transformative journey. By engaging with a diverse cohort of students, the program aims to cultivate a cadre of democratic citizens who are not only well-informed but also motivated to contribute to the democratic process. The DFTP initiative stands as a testament to the power of education in empowering individuals to be catalysts for change, and advocating for a more inclusive and equitable society.
Looking Ahead
The successful launch of the DFTP program at Dhaka University is just the beginning. As more students engage with the course, the ripple effects of their learning and activism are expected to extend beyond the university’s walls, influencing communities and shaping the future of democracy in Bangladesh. MGR, along with its partners IFES and USAID, remains committed to expanding this initiative, nurturing a generation of informed, active citizens ready to embrace the challenges of democracy and pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.
Conclusion
The introduction of the Democracy- From Theory To Practice course at Dhaka University marks a pivotal moment in civic education in Bangladesh. Through this program, students are being equipped with the tools to not only understand democracy but to actively participate in its processes. As these young minds embark on their journey of discovery and empowerment, their impact on the democratic landscape of the nation holds boundless potential. Together, we stand on the cusp of a new era of democratic engagement, poised to transform the fabric of society for generations to come.
