Dhaka, Bangladesh – A groundbreaking initiative is unfolding at the heart of Bangladesh’s academic landscape. The much-anticipated ‘Democracy: From Theory to Practice’ course, an innovative university-level civic education module, is now accepting applications for its Spring 2024 intake. This program is a collaborative effort between the Microgovernance Research Initiative (MGR) at the University of Dhaka, and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), and is supported by USAID.
What Is the Course About?
The course is designed to immerse students in the practicalities of democratic life. Focusing on how citizens can defend both their own and others’ rights and responsibilities, it champions the values of diversity and equality. In an era riddled with challenges like disinformation, exclusion, and rising populism, this course aims to mold students into informed, active participants in democratic processes. The underlying principle is clear: democratic citizens are made, not born.
Who Can Enroll?
This opportunity is open to students from Dhaka University, Chittagong University, Barishal University, and BSMRSTU. Primarily targeting 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-year Bachelor program students, the course stands as a beacon of hope for young minds eager to delve deeper into the workings of democracy.
